The Red Charity Gala, without a doubt the most awaited fashion event for a cause in the country and the product of the passionate efforts of society figures Tessa Prieto–Valdes and Kaye Tinga, once again champions the best Filipino creative talents in fashion while fostering awareness and tirelessly raising funds for two worthwhile causes: the Philippine Red Cross and the Assumption High School Batch 1981 Foundation.
Now on its ninth year, the Red Charity Gala 2017, to be held on October 14, 2017, at the Shangri-La at the Fort with the support of BENCH as part of the brand’s 30th anniversary, brings to the runway the creative ingenuity of Joey Samson and his androgynous, gender fluid creations.
With the theme PilgrimAge, this year’s gala pertains to a journey, a religious devotion, a voyage to a sacred place. For Joey, it is a depiction of one man’s journey to nostalgia, recaptured via images best portrayed by a mood, a moment, a patina, a place, an individual, a feeling, rendering symbolisms represented by garments that evoke/ embody sentiments and souvenirs.
Here, he melds old style glamour with hints of the romantic and lady-like form, harmonizing extravagant detailing with traditional silhouettes for a look that is contemporary yet beyond time.
“This collection will be a balancing act,” Joey says. “It will run the gamut from tradition to something a bit outre, remixing looks and reshuffling garment elements.” Further, he says, “I want the clothes to be a revival of old wardrobe favorites, as if relics of a long passage, at the same time, something with a sense of familiarity with a contemporary feel transitioning from conventional, street to ceremonial”.
From his initial dreams of being a doctor, graduating with a pre-medicine degree in college, Joey took the plunge and pursued his true passion – fashion and doing clothes – by enrolling in the Slim’s Fashion and Art School. Subsequently, he apprenticed under the renowned Jojie Lloren for basic draping and pattern making and later, at CITEM, back when they would fly in professors from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Since then, he has bagged numerous awards and accolades such as the MTV Style Awards in 2004 and the Menswear Designer of the Year 2007 at the Mega Fashion Awards.
By officially being Red Charity Gala’s honoree for 2017, Joey Samson joins the league of world-renowned Filipino designers who have previously graced the event: Dennis Lustico, Furne One, Michael Cinco, Cary Santiago, Ezra Santos, Jojie Lloren, Lesley Mobo, and Chito Vijandre.

This year’s fashion genius on center stage for the Red Charity Gala is London based Filipino designer Lesley Mobo. His pieces are show stopping and luxurious but edgy and almost downright delectable. We are nothing short of slack jawed and amazed by his pieces and we can’t wait to show the public his creations!
Lesley’s credentials are as long as the train on Princess Diana’s wedding gown and are equally as impressive. Graduating from the prestigious Central St Martin’s in 2002 with a First Class B.A. Honours Degree in Fashion, his final year collection titled “Maniac” was co-sponsored by Cerruti allowing him to use luxurious tailoring fabrics from Lanifico Fratelli Cerruti Italy. He also received the Colin Barnes Award for fashion illustration from Central St Martin’s, a nomination in the Chartered Society of Designers Fashion Awards held in the British Natural History Museum, and participated in the ‘Fashion in Motion exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum from which his works were featured in the BBC News. In 2002 he was interviewed by John Galliano for the House of Christian Dior, and has also assisted for Clements Ribeiro and Cacharel. In 2002 he accepted a designer post in the newly established brand Jasmine Di Milo in Harrods, London.
Red Charity Gala welcomes you home, Lesley and we await with bated breath, your collection!

It was a night for glamour, fashion, art and charity. It was also a night to see old friends again and have a moment to reconnect with them and give back to the community.
